Hiring a Wedding Consultant

So you have decided you want to hire a wedding consultant. Here are some things to keep in mind during your hunt for the perfect wedding planner.

You better shop around!
A good rule is to interview at least three consultants, or any other wedding professionals for that matter, before hiring anyone. With each interview you will gain insight and knowledge of exactly what you want ... or even more importantly what you don't want! In the end you should have confidence, knowing that you have made an educated choice and found the best person for the job!

Questions to help you find the right consultant for your wedding:

How long has the consultant been in the business?
How many weddings has the consultant planned?
Has the consultant planned weddings comparable in size to your wedding?
Can you get references from former and current clients? (This is a must! Get the references and actually call them!!)
Can you see pictures of the consultants work?
Does he/she work full-time or part-time as a consultant?
Will there be any other weddings scheduled on the same day of your wedding?
How much (or how little) time will be devoted to your wedding?
Is the consultant a full-service planner?
Exactly which services does the consultant offer?
What type of role if any will the consultant take on the wedding day, if any?
What is the cost and how is it computed? Hourly? Flat fee? By percentage?
Exactly what does the quoted fee include and omit?

Questions to ask yourself after meeting with each consultant. Follow your heart and instincts!

What was my first impression of this person?
Will I feel comfortable working closely with this person?
Does he or she understand and respect my taste, style, desires and needs?
Do I trust that this person will work hard to provide the service(s)to my satisfaction?

Once you have made your decision to hire a wedding consultant, make sure that you get a detailed list of all services and fees in writing on a signed contract to avoid any problems later on!
