Selecting a Baker

Finding a Baker
Ask friends, family members, and other recently married couples for referrals of good wedding cake bakers in your area. You could also consult the yellow pages of your phone directory or ask for referrals from your other wedding professionals. Of course, you can also use our local services directory to search for wedding cake bakers in your area.

When to Start the Search...
Plan to order your wedding cake at least two to four months before your wedding. You will probably want to start looking for a baker as early as six months to a year before your wedding. Plan on doing a lot of comparison shopping at a number of different bakers. You may be able to save a great deal, without compromises on quality, by speaking to several bakers before making any commitments.

Before you meet with a baker to select your wedding cake you should know...

  • The date, time and location of your wedding reception
  • Estimated head count to determine the size of the cake
  • Wedding colors or theme to match any decorations on the cake.

Questions to Ask Your Baker

  1. How long have they been in business? Are they a full-time or part-time baker? Do they specialize in wedding cakes?
  2. Do they customize each cake based on individual preferences?
  3. What choices for flavors, fillings and frostings are available? Can you have a different flavor for each layer of the cake?
  4. What is the price per serving? Are there additional fees for various flavors, fillings, frostings, decorations, etc.?
  5. How is the cake made, using packaged cake mix or all homemade ingredients?
  6. Do they have a variety of columns, pillars, and cake toppers available? What is the fee for renting these items?
  7. Will they deliver and set up the cake at the reception site? Is there an additional fee for this service?
  8. Can you see pictures of their previous work? Ask to see pictures of cakes with sizes, designs, and styles similar to what you want for your wedding.

Note: When making an appointment to meet with a baker ask if they will have samples available for tasting. Most bakers will make a small sample cake free of charge for you to try at your first meeting. Don't order a cake without sampling the goods first!

Points for the contract
Make sure that you request a written copy of your order and get a contract before you hand over any money or pay deposits. The contract/order should include...

  • General description of the cake type, style and decorations
  • Number of layers & flavors and fillings for each layer
  • Type of frosting
  • Cake top
  • Wedding date, time and location of delivery. Make sure the baker arrives at the reception in time to set up the cake before the guests arrive.
  • Total price, including delivery and set up charges
