Band
vs. DJ

Here
are some things to consider when deciding between a band
and DJ for your reception music...
Consider Your Budget
When it comes to price, a band is definitely the more
expensive way to go. The cost varies based on city, number
of performers, day and time. For a four to five hour
reception the cost for a band can be anywhere from $1,000
to $10,000, while DJs range from $400 to $1,000.
Consider Music Variety
When it comes to music for your reception you will want
a good mix of fast and slow, old and new, and songs
that everyone will know and dance to!
DJs definitely have the advantage
in the area of music variety. They can typically get
and play any song that has been recorded.
A good band, however, will also have an extensive library,
and can put a interesting, new twist on the classics.
Whether you are considering a band or DJ, you should
always ask for a tape, song list, and references.
Think about the songs that you absolutely have to hear
at
your reception, for the first dance, etc., if the
band or
DJ isn’t willing to get or learn them then
look elsewhere!
Consider Your Reception Location
Check with your reception site for any restrictions on
the number of musicians or pieces of equipment. Some
reception sites have noise limitations and electrical
power supply restrictions. You need to ask these questions
before you start scouting bands.
Also consider the amount of
room available at your reception site for the band or
DJ to set up. Bands typically require
a larger area than DJs to contain all of their equipment
and musicians. Be sure that you have enough space for
your band or DJ to setup, and still have room to dance
the night away without falling all over each other.
Remember, there is no "right" solution
for reception music. If
you are still having trouble deciding between a band
and a DJ, call around and get some demo tapes or go see
a few bands or DJ's perform, if possible.
