Finding a DJ or Band
You should begin your search for a DJ or band about 6 months to a year before the wedding. Ask friends, family members, and other recently married couples for referrals of good entertainers in your area. A great resource for finding a wedding band or DJ other wedding professional such as your caterer, photographer, or reception site manager. They are sure to have seen many different DJs and bands in action over the years. Also check out the DJs and bands listed on this site in our Local Services directory.

Check with your reception site.
Before you hire any musicians for your wedding reception, check with your reception site for any restrictions. Make sure that there is enough room for the band/DJ and adequate power supply for their equipment. Also ask about any noise restrictions.

Meeting Potential Entertainers
Plan on meeting with a few different wedding DJs or bands before you make any final decisions. While you can rule out some entertainers right away because of cost or unavailability, you really need to sit down with the entertainer in person to asses if they are the right person for the job.

Make sure that the DJ or band will be using up-to-date equipment and speakers. Inquire about backup equipment incase of malfunction. Ask about the size of their music collection and if the entertainers will be able to take requests. Make sure that they are willing to play all of your favorite song and abstain from any you don't want played, such as the "Macarena" or "YMCA."

Personality is Key
When hiring a professional entertainer to emcee your reception, keep in mind that this entertainer will aid you in arranging the traditional events. They will be in charge of keeping the party moving and on schedule. You want to find someone who is both personable and professional. Someone who is easy to work with and open to your ideas! Anyone can sit and play songs, but a great DJ or band leader will be able to read the crowd to keep your guests boogying down all night long!

Price Points
It is not uncommon for musicians to require you to pay anywhere from a 4-6 hour minimum rate regardless of how long they actually work. Also talk about any overtime fees if you end up using them longer than you had planned.

Check References & Listen to Tapes
It is very important to ask for and check references for DJs and Bands. If they offer you a sample tape, make sure that you actually take the time to listen to the tape!

Points for the contract
Once you have selected a band or DJ make sure that you get a contract that includes every part of your agreement in writing before you hand over your deposit. Here are a few things that you definitely want included in the contract...

Time of Arrival
Arrange a time with your ceremony or reception site when the band or dj can set up their equipment. Make sure they have plenty of time to prepare or warm up, if necessary, before the event begins.

The Exact Cost
You should have the exact cost written on the contract, even if it is just what the hourly rate will be. Find out exactly what this cost includes and what is extra.
